In search of THE bird

November 11th, 2009 · 2 Comments

It’s raining today  — and cold — and the fall leaves here in the Raleigh, N.C., area are covering the ground like shag carpeting  in all the best colors of those amazing 1970s.

Perfect timing for that first cup of hot cocoa to sip while pondering THE bird.

In a frugal household such as ours that pondering really means: Where can we get the biggest bird for the smallest price in time for Thanksgiving?

Lucky for me, the grocery ads came out today.

Kroger has $7, $9 and $11 turkeys, depending on size. That works out to be about 45 cents a pound for the Honeysuckle White turkey. The only catch is you must spend $25 in addition to your bird.

Over at Harris Teeter, the deal is a little sweeter. Store-brand birds are 39 cents a pound, with that same additional $25 purchase. Thursday through Sunday only. Mmmm. Do I buy now or wait for a better deal next week?

Have you found a great price on your Thanksgiving bird?

Do tell.

Let’s get a list going.

I am waiting until you tell me the right time to buy my turkey. So, let’s talk turkey!

I haven’t bought mine yet. I wanted to get a pastured turkey from one of the local farms. But apparently you have to sign up in August to get one for November!
